Outlook Express from Microsoft is a wonderful E-mail client. It is MIME compatible, which means that you can send multimedia data like HTML pages in the mail. The receiver will get to see the web page as it looks like. YOu can download Outlook Express from Microsoft site. also some CD-ROMs contain it. It is also available with Office 98 for the Mac. Outlook is extremely easy to setup as it is very comfortable with Internet Config.

Sending and receiving e-mail is very easy with Outlook. If you have ever used any browser you find the software to be something like that.

Read the information below to see how to configure Outlook.

  1. Open Outlook by double clicking on its icon. The application should be wherever you have installed it.

  2. When you launch Outlook for the first time, it will ask you to verify certain information. Click OK and proceed. This will also include setting up the preferences. You can also set your preferences from the Edit Menu -> Preferences.

  3. The preferences settings that you need to do are, your identity, e-mail address, SMTP server etc. Click here to see the image, which shows all the necessary information you must put in. Notice the red rectangle on the right side of the screen. It shows under which item you will find these settings.

  4. The next thing you must do is set the message composition. You can send HTML or Plain text messages. Click which ever you want to. Also make the Attachments popup menu as Base 64. BinHex does not work on other platforms other than Macs. So if the receiver is on some other platform your attachment will not be received properly. Click here to see the image.

That is all that is required to set in Outlook. You can set other preferences according to your own needs.

Here are some tips that you could use.

  1. When writing mail, in the message body if you type any web address like http://www. apple.com, you will create a hyperlink in the message. The receiver can then click on the link to go to the designated site. Also you can use mailto:person@company.com to create hyperlink for mailing.

  2. The messages that you receive, you can click and hold down the mouse to add the sender to your address book.

  3. To send an attachment ( a file which you had previously created using some other application) click on the Attach button on the write mail window. It is a good way of sending small graphics or photographs and also documents or worksheets.

Experiment with Outlook and you will discover a lot of new things. It is very stable.
