1. Where can I chat on the Internet? You'll find numerous
Web sites that offer chat. See our Places to Chat on the Net page for
a list of sites that offer chat. Other popular methods include Internet
Relay Chat (IRC) and graphical chat programs like The Palace. Our Tutorials
and Other Resources page can help you learn more about using IRC and graphical
chat. 2. Do I need any special software? It depends on the type of chat you choose to participate in. At some Web sites, you need only a Web browser, like Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. Other chat sites require a browser plus a free browser plug-in or control that you can download. For Internet Relay Chat, you need to install a separate IRC program (also known as an "IRC Client") on your computer. There are independent
chat software e.g. AOL's AIM
or ICQ. Large number of users prefer
these to chat room as they allow to maintain list of friends who you may
wish to communciate with. 3. Are there any chats where I can just use my Web browser? Yes. The Places to
Chat on the Net page lists many Web sites that require only a Web browser.
Some chat sites require you to install a small browser plug-in. 4. Is it safe to chat on the Internet? Are chat areas moderated? Some chat areas on the Net are moderated and are clearly marked as such. But many Web sites and IRC channels are wide-open and uncensored. Some of what you see could be offensive to you. For this reason, children should always have adult supervision while chatting on the Internet. Also, avoid revealing
sensitive personal information (your address, phone number, etc.) in chat
rooms. 5. Is there a good chat site for my kids to use? There are quite a
few. You can find several Family oriented chat rooms and discussions at
the People/Chat tab off the Personal Start Page. Everything. If you
have a special interest, chances are good that there's a Web site, IRC
channel, or other chat area devoted specifically to it. Many chats, however,
are purely social and have no specified topic. The quality, tone, and intelligence,
of course, varies from site to site and day to day. You may need to spend
some time to find the chat that's right for you.
